Guardians, An Abstract Tribal Painting

©Carolyn Bernard Young, Guardians, 24 x 18″, mixed media on watercolor paper, framed (29.25 x 23.25 x 1″)

The cultures of many Southeastern Indian tribes, such as the Choctaw, used stories to pass down legends and historical information. In one story I read, Cloud People were briefly mentioned. Since then I’ve searched for more information about the Cloud People, without success. The impression I got was they were guardians of a sort, possibly ancestors, watching over Choctaw people, children in particular. I may be all wrong, but nonetheless, this painting is my interpretation of Cloud People or Guardians. If you have information to share, I’d love to hear from you!

Created on an 18 x 24″ sheet of watercolor paper using acrylic paints, inks,  and collage. Multiple coats of non-yellowing, water resistant medium are applied to seal and protect the painting. It has a custom matt and is framed simply in a black wooden frame with plexi glazing.
