Keepsake Box – Cardinal

The cardinal totem is known to represent Boldness, Confidence, and Creativity. It is also believed to be a messenger bringing news or a warning. I always think of my mom when I see a red bird in my yard.

This beautiful tile is handmade by rolling out a slab of stoneware clay, and cutting to size. When leather hard, the tile is covered with three layers of black under glaze, then the outline of the image is carved, and a layer of wax added before the color is inlaid. The end result resembles scratch board or wood cuts with a gorgeous deep red color.
